A Polish reader sends in the following
observation:
Gazeta Wyborcza is a leading Polish
leftist/liberal paper. It fanatically opposes the Polish government position of
not allowing into Poland the illegal migrants who have been brought by the Belarussian
dictator to the Polish frontier.
Well, today Gazeta Wyborcza reported
that a funeral of an unborn child was conducted in a cemetery. A migrant woman
miscarried; it was her miscarriage that was buried with a ceremony.
What's interesting is that Gazeta
Wyborcza, which is strongly pro-choice, used the term "unborn child."
Otherwise, they always use terms like "fetus." Moreover, they condemn
using the term "unborn child." They violently oppose any kind of
funeral or other ceremony connected with the bodies of these kinds of children –
whether they are the bodies of the miscarried or the aborted. Gazeta Wyborcza
used this term only now - when writing about the miscarriage of a woman from
Iraq.
Language
is manipulated – shamelessly and cynically – to serve a master narrative. This
is exactly what happens in the creation of Bieganski
the Brute Polak Stereotype.
Danusha, you say: "Language is manipulated – shamelessly and cynically – to serve a master narrative. This is exactly what happens in the creation of Bieganski the Brute Polak Stereotype."
ReplyDeleteExactly. Only this seems even more shameless and cynical than usual, which is saying something.
This appeared on facebook today:
ReplyDelete"A Harley Biker is riding by the zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a little girl leaning into the lion's cage.
Suddenly, the lion grabs her by the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her, under the eyes of her screaming parents.
The biker jumps off his Harley, runs to the cage and hits the lion square on the nose with a powerful punch.
Whimpering from the pain, the lion jumps back letting go of the girl, and the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly. A reporter has watched the whole event.
The reporter addressing the Harley rider says, 'Sir, this was the most gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'
The Harley rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt right.'
The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a journalist, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the front page... So, what do you do for a living and what political affiliation do you have?'
The biker replies, I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican.
The journalist leaves.
The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:
"U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH."
....and THAT pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these days."
It made me laugh anyway - though perhaps I ought to have been crying.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteFew days ago German chancellor Angela Merkel retired from politics. There was a goodbye ceremony in Berlin. Soldiers marching at night with torches. Very reminiscent.

Danusha, I am sorry, but you are being badly misinformed by the "Polish reader". I am not a "Gazeta Wyborcza" fanboy, nor do I have a problem with people disliking that paper. However, almost all the "Polish reader" wrote were lies. Big and obvious and shameless ones.
ReplyDeleteI saw you criticize a facebook friend for blindly condemning NYY. Please be aware that Gazeta Wyborcza, despite not being as left-leaning nor as "woke" as NYT, is even more hated by many people who have very little respect for the truth or honesty in debate.
I will quickly point out the lies:
1) it "fanatically opposes government policy of not letting the migrants in" - lie. They only request the government to follow the law by allowing these people to file for asylum and gather them in immigraton centres for that time it takes to process the motion. There is a wide consensus in Poland that these people should not be let in, but neither they should be kept in the forests until they freeze to death. Incidentally, the government is infringing the Constitution (again) to enforce its policy. I see no protest from the "Polish reader" nor others like him.
2) They always use the term "fetus'- lie. Short google search of Wyborcza articles proves they use different words and have no clear naming convention for these matters. In fact, Wyborcza has no clear position regarding abortion, it has quite a lot of Catholic or conservative journalists and it gave space to many divergent views on abortion. It supported the so-called "compromise" legislation, which is already very restrictive from the US perspective.
3) Violent oppostion to funerals of unborn children - this is just a ridiculous lie. Goebbels would be proud of a "Polish reader". What Wyborcza opposes is FORCING women to give birth - when they do not want to - to children with e.g. no brain or other obviously mortal defects, for the sole reason as to allow such a child then to have a funeral. Nobody in Wyborcza opposes such funerals when parents want them.
